Build a Bridge

First things first. You must decide the size your bridge needs to be. Length-Height-Width. A visit to your local timber yard is now required, armed with all the dimensions of the various pieces of timber required to build your bridge. Most timber merchants will gladly cut timber to the exact size required. This will save you any amount of time.

Start with section "A" and mark out as indicated below and then cut to shape

Repeat for the other side

Section A

Once both bottom sections have been cut to shape, take sections "B & C" and place into position ensuring each piece is square to the bottom section. Drill each section twice as illustrated in picture below, and then secure all sections using NUTS & BOLTS.

Next join both sides together using the three section "H's".One in the middle and the other two, six inches from each end, using at least 3 inch screws.

Next, fit the top hand rail using section "D" Start from one side, drill & screw. Move forward and gently push down on rail and fix into position , repeat over rest of sections until hand rail is fully fixed into position. The wood will bend into shape creating a nice even arc.Once fully secure, trim to required length.

Next fit cross rails using sections "F"
Place into position and mark both pieces where they cross.

Here comes the tricky part. In between marks, cut and remove wood to half the thickness of the wood on both pieces. This will allow both sections to interlock making the cross you require.

Next Fit top side rails using section "E" Work from top centre out to each side and fix into position. Once fixed into position you will need to plane the top until level with top hand rail. This will give you a nice neat finish to the top.

Next Fit foot boards using sections "G" It's up to the individual as to what gap is left between foot boards.
